A Brief History
Founded in 1916 in Munich, Germany BMW’s history started with aircraft engine manufacturing during the first World War before becoming one of the world’s most recognised luxury automotive brand.
During the second World War, BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke AG) again produced aircraft motors and military equipment for Germany before transitioning into automobile production in 1928. The company has established a solid reputation for engineering performance-oriented cars and motorcycles positioning it as a global luxury brand.
The launch of the “Neue Klasse” models in the 1960s saw BMW transform into a modern sports sedan manufacturer. The company is now returning to the Neue Klasse design language for model development going forward.
M for Motorsport
In 1972 BMW Motorsport GmbH was created and later became BMW M, which resulted in a range of high perfomance road cars. The company developed sports sedans and roadsters such as the BMW 328, which became very successful in motorsport.
After predominately building sedans and coupes BMW expanded into SUVs resulting in the X series and the EV market with the BMW i sub-brand. Electric models such as the BMW i3 and i7 helped establish BMW’s EV and hybrid presence.
Today BMW is one of the world’s leading luxury and performance car makers, competing with Mercedes‑Benz and Audi.
