Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems
A Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is an electronic alert system in a vehicle that monitors the air pressure inside the tires and advises the driver if the pressure is is not operating within the recommended range.
Types of TPMS
Direct TPMS (dTPMS)
- Measures actual tire pressure in real time
- Uses sensors inside each tire (usually attached to the valve stem)
- Relays data to the vehicle’s dashboard
- Generally more accurate and common in modern vehicles
Indirect TPMS (iTPMS)
- Uses wheel speed sensors – Anti-Lock Braking system (ABS)
- Doesn’t measure pressure directly
- Generally less accurate but lower cost and no internal sensors
- Detects underinflation by comparing tire rotation speeds
How TPMS Works
- Sensors (or software) detect abnormal tire pressure
- A warning light (often shaped like a horseshoe with an exclamation mark) lights up on the vehicl’e dashboard
- Some systems show exact pressure for each tire
What are the Benefits of TPMS?
- Enhances fuel efficiency (proper inflation means less rolling resistance)
- Increases overall safety by reducing the risk of blowouts
- Extends tire life by reducing wear
Common TPMS Issues
- False warnings due to temperature changes
- Sensor damage during tire changes
- Dead sensor batteries (especially in direct TPMS)
- Sometimes requires recalibration after tire replacement or rotation
A Few Maintenance Tips
- Manually check your tire pressure at least once every 6 weeks
- Don’t rely solely on TPMS
- Replace TPMS sensors every 5–10 years (depending battery life)
- Reset system after inflating or rotating tires (if required)
Choosing the right TPMS for your RV, SUV or Truck
