Citroen Xsara 2005 WRC M. Stohl Rally Cyprus

Citroën Xsara 2005 WRC – Manfred Stohl, Rally Cyprus

The Citroën Xsara WRC was one of the most successful rally cars of the early 2000s, and the 2005 Rally Cyprus provided one of its most memorable privateer performances. Austrian driver Manfred Stohl, co-driven by Ilka Minor, took his OMV-backed Xsara WRC to an impressive second-place finish on the rough gravel stages of Cyprus.

The result was particularly significant for Stohl, as it was his first World Rally Championship podium. Driving a 2004-specification Xsara WRC, he finished behind works Citroën driver Sébastien Loeb and ahead of a strong field of factory-supported competitors.

The Citroën Xsara WRC

Developed from the road-going Citroën Xsara, the Xsara WRC was designed specifically for the World Rally Championship. It featured four-wheel drive, a turbocharged engine and sophisticated suspension designed to cope with everything from fast gravel tracks to extremely rough rocky stages.

The Xsara became particularly successful in the hands of Sébastien Loeb, who helped establish Citroën as a dominant force in the WRC during the first half of the 2000s. Its combination of strong performance, excellent handling and durability made it highly competitive across a wide variety of rally conditions.

Stohl’s Cyprus car was a 2004 Rally Australia-specification Xsara WRC, rather than the latest factory works specification. Nevertheless, it proved extremely competitive over the demanding Cypriot stages.

Manfred Stohl and Ilka Minor

Manfred Stohl was one of Austria’s leading rally drivers and had already accumulated considerable international experience before joining the OMV program with the Citroën Xsara WRC.

For the 2005 season, Stohl was partnered by Austrian co-driver Ilka Minor. Their combination proved particularly effective on the difficult gravel events, and the Cyprus Rally became a major milestone in Stohl’s WRC career.

Their second-place finish was Stohl’s maiden WRC podium, achieved against a field containing several factory drivers and newer-generation WRC machinery.

Rally Cyprus 2005

The 2005 Cyprus Rally took place from 13–15 May 2005 and formed the sixth round of the World Rally Championship. The event consisted of 18 stages and 326.68 km of competitive gravel, with the notoriously rough and rocky roads putting enormous demands on the cars.

The rally quickly became an endurance test. Several leading competitors encountered mechanical problems, including Marcus Grönholm and Petter Solberg, while the difficult conditions caused a high rate of attrition.

Sébastien Loeb dominated the event in his factory Citroën Xsara WRC, but behind him Stohl produced a remarkably consistent drive.

A Tough Gravel Challenge

Cyprus was known as one of the toughest rallies on the WRC calendar. Its rough, twisty gravel roads placed tremendous loads on suspension components, steering systems, engines and tires.

The 2005 event was no exception. The combination of rocks, dust and heat meant that simply reaching the finish was a major achievement. Michelin’s event summary noted that Stohl’s privately entered Xsara survived a difficult weekend while delivering a highly competitive performance.

Stohl also demonstrated his pace during individual stages. On SS13, Vavatsinia 1, he recorded the second-fastest time, just 4.1 seconds behind Loeb.

OMV Citroën Xsara WRC

The distinctive OMV-backed livery helped make Stohl’s Xsara one of the recognizable privateer rally cars of the 2005 season. OMV, the Austrian energy company, supported Stohl’s WRC campaign, while the Xsara provided a proven and competitive platform.

Although Stohl did not have the latest factory equipment, his performance demonstrated how competitive a well-prepared privateer Xsara could be when placed in capable hands.

The Cyprus result also produced a Citroën 1–2, with Loeb taking victory and Stohl finishing second.

Significance of the Cyprus Result

Stohl’s second place was more than simply a strong rally result. It represented his first WRC podium and established an important milestone in his career.

The result also contributed eight championship points, moving Stohl to seventh in the drivers’ standings after Cyprus with 11 points.

Later in the 2005 season, Stohl achieved another podium at Rally Australia, finishing third. He ultimately ended the 2005 drivers’ championship in ninth position.
